Word for 2012 | McPherson Photographer

Back in 2009 I started a new tradition with myself. I was introduced to the idea of choosing one word for the new year instead of making a typical resolution. One word to be curious about, to be inspired by, to strive for. You can read the original article here, and read about my word for 2011 here. My first word of the year was presence. My word this past year was mastery.

I chose mastery last year because I wanted to improve my skills as a photographer and a business owner. I can’t say I was even really conscious of my word during the year, but I do feel that I’ve improved so much this year. It’s funny to look back at my work from the beginning, and compare it to my work now. In fact, here’s a photo from my very first newborn shoot, and a photo from one of my latest newborn shoots. Big difference, right?

I don’t even know if it’s possible to master something like photography since it’s always changing. There’s always something new to learn. However, I’m really happy with my efforts to master my work in 2011.

In 2012, my word will be…

Word for 2012; Growth

Growth. I want to grow as a person, as a wife, as a photographer, and as a business owner.

How do I define growth? Development. Understanding. Responsibility. Maturity. Focus. These are all aspects of growing. I don’t think that growing and aging are necessarily synonymous. Every year I get older, but I don’t want to be stagnant in my personal development. So in 2012, I want to make a focused effort to grow.

Would you like to choose a word for 2012? Check out this list, and pick out a few words that really stand out to you, then narrow it down from there. Only choose ONE for the year. It’s up to you what to do with it. Write it down in a journal. Write it on your bathroom mirror. Blog about it. You may be surprised next December how the word has come into your life throughout the year.

I’d say you had some kid of awesome mastery this year. Well played sweet lass:) I watched Sherlock II last night on date night and fell in love with it:) I know it sounds too mom’ish to say…but this post just makes me so dang proud. Super proud of you. You continue to inspire me with your drive and fearlessness! Keep up the awesomeness! K

I really, really love this post and the entire concept behind it. So inspiring. You truly accomplished your word this year, and I can’t wait to see the post for next year.

Great post and thanks for this list! This reminds me of the giving keys. ((Awesome concept if you’re interested. They’re custom key necklaces that have a word of your choosing inscribed on them. You’re supposed to eventually give the key to someone else who needs the word on your key)) http://www.thegivingkeys.com/

Sorry if that sounds like an advertisement. It wasn’t meant to be, I have no affiliations. Just something you and your readers may be interested in!
